La Nouvelle Flibuste

A musical Utopia dreamed up at the end of the last century by Michel Kazungu, a naive composer and megalomaniac conductor, la Nouvelle Flibuste is a large brass and steel band created for musical street parades.
The copper arrangements are more evocative of mambo big band than municipal brass band, with their background of metallic percussion, ranging from the high-pitched, crystal-clear tones of spades (yes, you did read that correctly, road-builders’ spades beaten with the aid of a pair of nails) to the deep basses of the dudups, 400 litre drums wrought using the same technique as the steel drums from Trinidad.
